ROOFING CHALLENGE: Spangler Candy has been making some of America’s favorite candies since 1906. The company manufactures nearly 12 million Dum Dums® each day at its facility in Bryan, Ohio. Because food safety is a top priority at Spangler Candy, the manufacturer takes every precaution to provide a safe environment, such as making sure the product is kept from any contaminants. Knowing the risk of a potential roof leak, Spangler Candy began replacing the roof on the 400,000 sq. ft. facility in 1998. The company chose a FiberTite Roofing System by Seaman Corporation for an initial installation of nearly 85,000 sq. ft. “We can’t run an operation if we have roof leaks,” says Gackel. “We feel as though [the vinyl roof] has given us a good advantage to keep away from that situation.”

Since the initial installation, Spangler Candy has installed more than 300,000 additional sq. ft. of the vinyl roofing. The roof is resistant to the tacky exhaust from the candy manufacturing process, as well as UV exposure in the summer and sub-zero temperatures in the winter. Most importantly, the vinyl roofing system ensures a safe, leak-free environment for the food processing plant.
